Chapter 13

AFTER MY disastrous date with Carter, I sit in my car, thinking about his situation.

I’m so grateful that even though this blind date was another flop, at least I’m not hopelessly in love with my brother-in-law. Poor Carter.

I turn the key in the ignition and nothing happens. Just an ominous sounding click. After trying a few times, I realize this car is not going anywhere anytime soon.

As I lack any mechanical skills whatsoever, I find myself in a bit of a pickle.

What am I supposed to do? Does my car insurance cover roadside assistance? I’m sure it does, but what number do I call to even get assistance?

I should have asked Dan these things weeks ago when I first bought my little car and he arranged the insurance, but when you move to a new country there are a hundred and one important things you don’t think to ask until you find yourself in a situation that requires you to know said important things.

I can’t even phone Dan for help because he’s away at a business conference and I can’t exactly ask Clem to come rescue me with three-year-old twins in tow. They’ll already be fast asleep by now.

I could leave the car here and catch the T, but it’s bound to get towed and that will just cause another headache. I should probably have taken the T in the first place.

My mind is suddenly assaulted with unwelcome thoughts of being raped and murdered in an alley. I’m being ridiculous and I know it. Although it’s late, the streets are still bustling with activity as people spill out of restaurants and bars, chatting happily.

Okay Kate, you are a grown, independent woman. There’s no need to panic.

I mentally scroll through the list of people I could phone for help. It’s a short list.

My best bet is definitely my new bestie, Ben. Both The Old Copper Pig and his apartment are not too far from here so hopefully he’ll be able to come get me.

I pull out my phone and quickly send Ben an SOS text.
